Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth Without Refined Sugar

By Neka Pasquale, Founder of Urban Remedy

Satisfying your sweet tooth and snacking healthily are no longer mutually exclusive. At Urban Remedy, we couldn’t go without our sweets, so we’ve found yummy substitutes for refined sugars. We’re here to help satisfy your sweet tooth and keep you slender.

What’s so bad about refined sugar?
‘Refined’ is an adjective best kept away from your diet. White, or refined, sugar has gone through a purification process that eliminates all vitamins and minerals, leaving little more than a remote possibility of nutritional value and creating a product that is “pure” and easy to duplicate. We hate to break it to you, but the only thing pure about white sugar is that it is purely unhealthy.
Lacking the vitamins and minerals of raw, natural sugar cane, white sugar satisfies your taste buds and adds calories to your diet without supplying your body with any nutritional value. What a waste—a low glycemic diet is way better!

Sweet substitutes
Finding natural sweetening substitutes for sugar has never been easier. Here are three great options for sugar substitutes!
Stevia
Stevia
Stevia is a 100% natural sweetener derived from plant leaves. Free of carbohydrates, calories, and caffeine, stevia is a wonderful solution to satisfy your sweet cravings. Whole stevia leaves contain the nutrients calcium, potassium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc, and niacin, many of which are known to help regulate blood sugar. Stevia may also help lower blood pressure by preventing calcium from entering the blood stream, and it’s believed to have anti-inflammatory properties.
Stevia is available in both powder and liquid form. We recommend the latter, which is water-extracted without the aid of chemicals and thus less processed.
At Urban Remedy, we use stevia in our age-defying Time Machine combination of lemon, acai, and cayenne. Drink up for a quick trip!
Try our dreamy Blue Magic Milk, which is sweetened by stevia.

Agave
Agave Nectar has a low glycemic index, providing sweet flavor without the unhealthy blood sugar spike associated with white sugars. This sweetener is big on yum and long on fun!
You can find raw agave nectar in our brittles as well as our meals in a bottle!

Dates
Dates are high in fiber, absorbing LDL-cholesterol and naturally replenishing energy levels. They’re the perfect natural candy.
At Urban Remedy, we make our gluten-free No Oatmeal Cookies with dates, and they are sinfully delicious.
At home you can throw 1-2 in a smoothie, use them as a sweetener in recipes, or pop one in your mouth for a tasty sweet treat.
Try our dairy-free recipe for rich Avocado Cacao Mousse. It’s a decadent dessert that’s sweetened with dates and packed with anti-inflammatory cacao.

Next time your sweet tooth has you craving sugar, satisfy it naturally! Dessert is finally good for you. What a sweet deal!
