A Salad a Day Keeps the Weight Away

At Urban Remedy, we’ve noticed the negative stigma attached to salads, and are just curious: What gives?! Salads can be delicious, nutritious, fresh, and a great weapon against weight gain. Here are a few helpful hints for how to get the most out of your salads.

Packed with gluten (unless you are eating a gluten-free variety), bread expands in your stomach, filling you up, but with simple carbohydrates that spike your metabolism. These simple carbs diminish your immediate appetite, but leave you starving 30 minutes later. Instead, starting your dinner with a salad course layers your stomach with leafy-green roughage, leaving you still hungry for the main event. Roughage is also rich in fiber (a mineral with laxative properties) to keep your regular digestion on track.

Oil-based Dressings: Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat soluble, meaning they dissolve in fat. So, if your diet eliminates all fats, these vitamins will have a hard, if not impossible, time absorbing into your body. The best way to combat this problem? Use oil-based salad dressings. Olive or nut oils are packed with omega-3 fatty acids (the good kind of cholesterol), and provide your body with the best kinds of fats to aid vitamin absorption.
